How to Check Pokémon Card Centering (Photo Guide + Tool)
Centering is one of the fastest ways a card loses grade points. Even if corners and surface look clean, uneven borders can lower the final result. This guide shows a simple way to check centering from photos using a consistent setup.
What centering means
Centering is how evenly the artwork sits inside the border. You compare: left vs right and top vs bottom. If one side is noticeably thicker, the print is off-center.
Best photo setup for centering checks
- Place the card on a flat surface
- Use bright light (avoid glare)
- Hold your phone directly above the card
- Fill the frame with the card
- Take one clear photo for the front and one for the back
Use a tool to align and estimate
After taking photos, you can upload them to our free grading helper and align the frame. This provides a quick estimate for centering and visible condition issues:
Try the Centering / Grading ToolWhat to do if the result looks wrong
If you think the borders look strange, the photo is likely angled or has glare. Retake the photo top-down, then try again.

FAQ
Do I need a special camera?
No. A phone is fine if your photo is bright and sharp.
Should I take photos with the card in a sleeve?
If you can safely remove it, that usually improves accuracy because sleeves reflect light.
Is centering the only thing that matters?
No. Surface, edges, and corners matter too. Centering is just the quickest thing to check first.
